“Don’t Say Where You’re From”

Everywhere in the world, people experiencing poverty continue to suffer discrimination. This contributes to the perpetuation of poverty. In rich countries, it takes 4 to 5 generations to overcome the obstacles of being born into a family in poverty. In Brazil and South Africa, it takes 9 generations to escape poverty, and 11 in Colombia. 

Although prohibited by international law, people living in poverty suffer institutional violence and daily discrimination, generation after generation. To give a face and a voice to poverty, Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, sat down with people living in poverty in Belgium. Together with ATD Fourth World movement and the support of FES Geneva, they look at how discrimination can be fought and stigmatization overcome.
