Human Rights Economics: A Conversation

Human rights has been a powerful tool for political change but has not yet played the part it could in steering economic thinking and economic policy in a more human-centred, ethics-based direction.

Over the course of this two-day conversation, we explored together whether articulating a concept of Human Rights Economics can help strengthen the human rights community’s contribution to economics.  We consideref what elements human rights brings to light that could be integrated in a new, human rights, branch of economics. We reflected on whether this approach is the best way towards instituting an ethics-based, human rights-consistent economy. We envisaged this conversation as an opportunity to step aside from institutional considerations, to liberate ourselves from the strictures of “what is feasible,” so as to ask “what is desirable?” and “how do we achieve it?"
