Side Event HRC 60: NMIRF and social participation: Strengthening Human Rights Implementation at the National Level

This side-event will discuss the strengthening of international human rights standards and the impact of civic engagement in different mechanisms to support national implementation.

National Mechanisms for Implementation, Reporting, and Follow-up (NMIRFs) and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) are mechanisms which play a significant role in the national implementation of international human rights standards. NMIRFs perform an important reporting function and support states in fulfilling the recommendations they receive from UN human rights mechanisms by initiating, coordinating, and tracking national follow-up efforts. The UPR on the other hand, reviews the human rights records of all 193 UN member states every 4.5 years. It is a multi-stakeholder process with strong civil society engagement as well as an opportunity for states to showcase progress, address challenges, and receive recommendations.

Given the growing significance of NMIRFs and the UPR as human rights implementation tools, the Geneva Office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Institute for Development and Human Rights (IDDH) and UPR Info are organizing a panel discussion on the interconnections between these mechanisms. This event will also be live-streamed: Watch Here
